With the East being as strong as it is and the Union with a crew of inexperienced players makes for a tough season. It is imperative that the U come out to a strong start and that is possible. Looking into the first month of action sees some favorable games. First game against SKC shall be tough, going against one of the best teams from last season. But they then face Colorado Rapids and New England Revolution both winnable games. They end the month in New York going against rivals Red Bulls. If the Union can end the first month with seven or more points will be a great start.
Key Additions:
Connor Casey: The big man up top is one of the more veteran strikers in MLS. He has bagged 40 goals and one MLS Cup in six seasons with the Colorado Rapids. The 31 year old striker had a rough season last year with two goals in 18 games. He is looking to bounce back strong with a new team and the Union will be hoping he can rekindle some of his old magic.
Le Toux: Union’s all time goal scorer returns after a season which saw him suite up for two different teams. Not being able to fit in with the Whitecaps or New York Red Bulls. The expectation on Le Toux is that he will be able to work up top and in the midfield, create scoring opportunities. It is not expected that he will find his MVP candidate form (although that would be appreciated), but he shall act more of a facilitator.
Jeff Parke: A native son returns home to suite up for the blue and gold. The 6’1 30 year old has been in the league for a solid eight seasons and has established himself as one of the most consistent and best defenders. His good form last season earned him a spot on the national team. A lot is on his shoulders as he is expected to fill the big shoes of Carlos Valdes.
Key Losses:
Carlos Valdes: The former captain was loaned out to Colombian side Independente Santa Fe on a season long loan. A big hit to the team’s defense as Valdes proved to be a savvy defender. Much beloved by the fans, Carlos will truly be missed.
Freddy Adu: The DP is still on the team but has no intentions on playing for the club or training with the club. It has become clear that he will and must be shipped out. The only problem he has no suitors. The Union are stuck with several options and non of them offer up a good ending.
Who Needs to Step up:
Roger Torres: Fan favorite and one of the only original players left on the roster. He hasn’t seen that much playing time but has shown promise. It is time for Roger to step up and take control. He showed that he needs to be on the pitch with having a strong preseason. With no Adu, it is his time.
Bakary Soumare: Only appearing in one game last season the big defender needs to have a strong season. The Union acquired him midway through last season but because of injuries saw limited time. He wasone of the best defenders in MLS with the Chicago Fire and hopefully he can regain his form.
