Shortly after the CBA was ratified by both the owners and players and the Memo of Understanding (that the lockout was over) was signed by both sides, the Flyers made several moves to strengthen the roster.
First, they signed 31 year-old 10-year NHL veteran Curtis Foster, who will play in 5/6/7 defenseman spot, and keeping some of our younger defenseman (Erik Gustafsson, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Brandon Manning, and maybe even Danny Syvret) in the minors to continue their development. Foster joins the list of veteran 3rd pairing defenseman that includes Andreas Lilja and Bruno Gervais. Whenever Andrej Meszaros comes back from injury, he will likely lead the third pairing.

The second move the Flyers made was trading for a friendly face, Goaltender Brian Boucher. Philadelphia traded minor league defenseman Luke Pither for Boucher and defenseman Mark Alt. The 36 year-old has spent time with 7 different NHL teams, including two other stints with the Philadelphia Flyers organization. He will likely spend some time in Adirondack right away. If Leighton struggles, expect Boucher to be called up from the minors to replace him as the Flyers backup, but make no mistake, Ilya Bryzgalov is the number one, and he will be playing a lot.
Other than that, there have been various rumors that the Flyers will be making star center Claude Giroux the next captain of the Orange and Black on Thursday, at the open practice at the Wells Fargo center. If they do so, Giroux would succeed the injured Chris Pronger and become the 19th captain in Flyers’ history (18th different captain, Bobby Clarke served twice).
UPDATE:
Paul Holmgren announced tonight that Claude Giroux would become the 19th captain in Flyers history, calling the decision “an easy one” and “the right one”
