LAS VEGAS, NV — NBA Hangtime Blogs writer John Schuhmann, who has covered #TeamUSA/#USMNT (US Men’s National Team) since 2006, tweeted and wrote today that he considers Stephen Curry a lock to make the team this summer that will travel to Spain to compete in the 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball. The gold medal winner gets an automatic bid to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

What’s even more interesting is that Schuhmann believes Curry could play a lot of shooting guard.

Here’s the depth chart that he posted, showing a progression of roster changes since the 2008 Olympics:

As can be seen on the chart, Klay Thompson is probably battling DeMar DeRozan and Bradley Beal for one or two shooting guard spots. It would be one shooting guard spot if USA braintrust Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski opt to go with more point guards than usual.

“I’m not going to say I’m going to make the team because you just never know,” Thompson told Marc Spears in an exclusive report for Yahoo Sports, “There are so many great players. You never know. But hopefully I can prove my worth this week.”

With the return of Derrick Rose, the superstar-approaching-echelon levels for Damian Lillard and Kyrie Irving, and the addition of John Wall in the wake of the withdrawals of Blake Griffin and Kevin Love, the point guard position is especially deep this summer.

Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes are long shots and very long shots, respectively, to make the team. Also, Schuhmann later tweeted that he felt DeMarcus Cousins would make the team at center, leaving just one spot at the power forward position remaining, likely for Green to vie for against Kenneth Faried, Andre Drummond, and Paul Millsap.

However, the 2014 NBA Playoffs showed us that Green can rise to the occasion and has very highly desirable leadership and teamwork qualities, so this upcoming week at Team USA training camp could get interesting in that regard.
