USF Bulls No. 102 in CBS Sports’ Weekly College Football Rankings

CBS Sports has released its weekly set of college football rankings, and after suffering their second straight loss, the South Florida Bulls came in at No. 102 in the overall rankings.

Obviously, this is not where the Bulls would like to be right now.

USF dropped one spot from last week’s rankings after a 27-3 defeat at the hands of Houston. UConn (No. 108), Tulane (No. 115), Tulsa (No. 124), and SMU (No. 128) were the AAC teams ranked below USF for this particular week.

At 3-6 on the season, it’s easy to understand why the Bulls have earned such a low ranking, although there are still a few teams in front of them that they may deserve to be ahead of.  Fresno State at No. 98 and Kansas at No. 101 are two teams that are ranked a little too high for my liking, and in a head to head, the Bulls would be the better pick.

But in the grand scheme of things, the ranking obviously doesn’t mean all that much for USF going forward. All that really matters is winning games, because then the rankings will take care of themselves.

The good news for the Bulls is that they should have an opportunity to earn their fourth victory of the season next weekend when they travel to SMU to take on a Mustangs team that hasn’t won a game all season, and according to the CBS rankings, is the worst team in college football.

If you’ve seen SMU play, it’s hard to argue with that opinion, which means that South Florida should go in and take care of business Saturday night so that it doesn’t find itself plummeting down the rankings.

Regardless of how strong your team is, playing against a winless team can be terrifying. After all, what does that team have to lose? SMU has scored 49 points total this season, which is quite the accomplishment for all the wrong reasons.

But maybe by the time USF gets to them next week, the Mustangs will have picked up a win at Tulsa. That, however, seems highly unlikely given how dreadful SMU has looked all season long.

It’s still going to take a massive effort for the Bulls to get to six wins on the year, as after the clash with SMU, South Florida faces games with Memphis and Central Florida to end the season.

The Bulls certainly won’t be favorites in either of those games, but with a dominant performance against SMU, perhaps that will give this team some much-needed momentum for the trip to take on the Tigers on November 22.

The bye week should allow this team to re-energize and make a few tweaks before heading to Dallas to try and build some confidence for the stretch run of the season.
