USMNT To Play World Cup Qualifier In Busch Stadium NOV 13

-6

Yes, this is a big deal.

St. Louis has been the home to some huge soccer matches over the past several years including recent visits by the USWNT, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea F.C. to name a few. Nothing against any of these footballing contests, but they were missing something…

Counting.

With the announcement that that USMNT will be playing a World Cup qualifying match at Busch Stadium, St. Louis soccer fans are going to get a match that is meaningful with direct impact on qualifying for World Cup ’18 – Russia.

Awesome.

That being said, it’s not a win or go home match for the Yanks. If they win they will not have clinched a World Cup berth. If they lose, they’ll not have submarined their chances of making the next World Cup. It’s the first (home) part of a long qualifying process.

Still, super good news for the city.

They’ll welcome back the USMNT for the first time since JUN 4 1997. And this will be the first World Cup Qualifier hosted by STL since 1989 (0-0 draw against El Salvador).

  • In April, the U.S. Women’s team played a World Cup tune-up in St. Louis at Busch Stadium, drawing a crowd of 35,817, which ranks as the largest crowd in U.S. history for a standalone Women’s National Team friendly match.

USMNT Coach Jurgen Klinsmann:

We are absolutely thrilled to be playing our first World Cup qualifier towards Russia 2018 in St. Louis. There is no more appropriate place to start this campaign than a city that has contributed so much to the history and tradition of soccer in the United States. Some of the best players we have ever produced have ties there, and now we look forward to bringing the National Team back home to St. Louis where we know the support will be incredible.

Cool.
