Things were not in sync between Matsuzaka and Martinez last night and the frustration was made public after the game:
“He fell behind in the count a lot,” explained Martinez “Sooner or later, you have to throw strikes and that’s a tough lineup. When you pitch behind in the count, it’s pretty tough to get outs.”
“He’s the one who . . . I’m just back there to help him go through the game,” said Martinez. “At the end, he’s the one who had the ball in his hand.”
Martinez said the frequent shaking off “was not the first time, so . . . ”
Nothing good can come of this spat. These are the things that happen when the team loses a game they know they should have won. If the clubhouse is starting to point fingers it may be time to reach for the panic button.
