Tuesday marked Claudio Vargas’ second start of the 2008 Cactus League. After two scoreless innings to start, skipper Ned Yost opted for a third inning. Unfortunately, Cubs’ rookies Kosuke Fukudome and Geovany Soto each collected RBI’s off of Vargas–Fukudome got his second hit in the third–a home run–while Soto doubled in a pair of runs.
While it is still early in the preseason, Vargas’ second time through the order was not nearly as good as the first time…as Ned Yost subjects his starters to three innings of work this week, it will be key as to which pitchers can pitch to the top of the order the second time through the batting order.
