Jason Varitek had a day off today with Tim Wakefield getting the nod, but when called upon in the top of the ninth to pinch hit for starting catcher Kevin Cash, Varitek delivered a solo-homerun to put Boston up 4-3 and eventually won the game 5-3.
Hideki Okajma got the save in the bottom of the ninth, his first this season, and the Boston Red Sox improved to 9-6.
Jed Lowrie who is filling in for injured third baseman Mike Lowell had quite a career debut for the Sox. Lowrie put Boston ahead in the top of the seventh inning on a two RBI single and ended the night going 3-4 with three runs batted in.
