Verlander bests Beckett and the Sox

The second half of the double header was one ace verses another…Justin Verlander vs. Josh Beckett.  Last time the two faced at Fenway, Beckett came out the winner,  but this time it was all Verlander.  Beckett gave up two quick runs in the 1st inning and that’s all the cushion Verlander would need to coast to a win for him and the Tigers.

Beckett didn’t have his best stuff.  He was having a hard time throwing some of his pitches for strikes and was going to a 3 ball count on a lot of hitters.  The batter he was having the hardest time with was Victor Martinez.  VMart went 3 for 3 against him.  I’ll still give Beckett a good deal of credit that even with not having his best stuff, he limited the damage to 3 runs and still pitched 6 strong innings.  He left the game with the Sox behind 2-0.  Rich Hill came out and pitched a 1-2-3 inning and was followed by Scott Atchison who gave up one run on two hits.

The story of the game was Justin Verlander though.  He was just crazy good.  He was using all his pitches and just dominating.  He threw 132 pitches through 7.2 innings and his last pitch to Ellsbury was 100 MPH.  The Sox were able to get just 4 hits against him and never able to get any kind of rally going.
