The Red Sox came home to Fenway Park for Game 6 and hoped to put the series to bed and be on their way to the World Series. The only stumbling block is that they'd have to go through Max Scherzer to get it done. The Sox had Clay Buchholz on the mound who got battered around a little bit in Game 2, so he was looking for a rebound performance. Clay didn't get that done, but struggling Victorino did by putting the team on top with his Grand Slam in the 7th.
The game started off like most of the games of the series with the game tied 0-0 for the first few innings. The Sox were able to strike first when they scored a single run in the 5th inning when Bogaerts hit a double and then Ells brought him home with an RBI single. Sox 1-0. The Sox weren't riding high for long though when Buchholz took the mound in the 6th and wasn't able to keep the lead. Buchholz let the first two batters on and he was done for the night. In a surprising move, John Farrell had Franklin Morales come into the game and it would spell the Tigers taking the lead. Morales walked Fielder to load the bases with no outs and then gave up a 2 run RBI single to VMart to put the Tigers up on top. Morales was done and Brandon Workman was in the game. Luckily Pedey made a great defensive play and Fielder made some horrible base running so the Sox got out of that inning only down one run, however the damage was done.
Scherzer got himself in a little bit of trouble in the 6th, but got out of it without the Sox being able to tie or take the lead. Workman took the mound again in the 7th and got 2 outs before handing the ball to Tazawa to face Miguel Cabrera. Taz showed his value in this series by once again putting Miggy away and ending the inning. Scherzer took the mound in the 7th, but when two runners got on he was done for the night. Ellsbury got on thanks to a rare fielding error by Iglesias and the bases were loading for the slumping Shane Victorino. Shane made us all forget about any kind of slump when he hit a grand slam to the Monster. Sox 5-2. All the life that went out of the park when the Tigers took the lead in the 6th was back with a vengeance. Craig Breslow continued to be impressive by pitching a 1-2-3 scoreless 8th and then handed the ball over to Koji Uehara for the 9th. Koji did what he usually does and closed the door on the Tigers' season. Uehara was named the ALCS MVP and no one could say he didn't deserve it. He's been lights out in the 9th for the Sox ever since he got tapped to be the closer.
The Red Sox are now set to take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series on Wednesday. It'l be a rematch of the 2004 World Series. Let's hope for the same result.
