Alexander Steen has done it again. With the Blues and Jets tied 2-2 and time running out in the third, overtime seemed like a pretty solid possibility until Steen netted his 11th goal of the season. Steen’s 11th came with the man advantage and gave the Blues two big points against a divisional foe.
We’ve seen Steen score plenty of nifty wristers and slappers so far in 2013-14, but his winner in the final minute against the Jets came on his backhand.
This is ridiculous. I’ve talked about Steen’s great start a few times in the past, but he just keeps building on his impressive beginning to 2013-14. Let’s look at what makes Steen’s first 10 games so impressive:
– He leads the league in goals with 11. He is ahead of Ovechkin by one goal, but he has played in two fewer contests than Ovie.
– Steen has scored his 11 goals on just 31 shots. That’s a shooting percentage of 35.5%. By comparison, Ovechkin’s 10 goals have come on 75 shots.
– His four power-play goals are tied for second in the NHL.
– Steen has two game winning tallies.
– Steen’s 16 points lead the Blues.
Is that enough praise for you? If not, stop and consider Steen scored eight times and tallied 27 points in 40 games in 2012-13. He has already passed his goal tally from last year and is well on his way to besting his point total too.
All good things come to an end. Steen may have a remarkable season, but his goal pace will trail off. His shooting percentage is insane and there’s no chance it stays that high over a larger sample of games.
It’s also important to remember this is a contract year for Steen. It’s common knowledge that the Blues want to keep him in St. Louis, but not even they could have predicted how Steen would start the season.
