Sean Taylor is a martyr to Redskins fans. Any criticism about St. Sean is fighting words in these parts.
It wasn’t a criticism, but former and still despised Redskins GM Vinny Cerrato says he took heat from team “ownership” over Taylor’s early career work habits.
Vinny made his comments on his syndicated talk show aired on CBS Sports radio last night. I was channel surfing while driving and my dial landed there at random – I swear I do not listen to him.
The topic was Cleveland’s Johnny Manziel and Josh Gordon. The sidekick asked the star if he was aware of a player who turned things around from an early poor reputation to become a real NFL star.
Only when I heard the answer did I piece it together that it was Vinny.
Ownership was concerned about Taylor’s aloof nature. He did not hang around the practice facility any longer than required.
The Vinny faced the challenge of, “how could you draft that guy?”
Cerrato never named names. Taylor was Joe Gibbs’ first Draft pick in 2004. Hog Heaven always credited Gibbs for making that pick. Maybe Cerrato is a talent genius. Whatever.
Cerrato said Taylor changed completely when he became a father and took on the responsibilities for a family. He wanted the best for his daughter. That meant relying on more than his athleticism to be excellent. It was then that Taylor became a true professional.
Taylor is an object lesson to all young players, says Cerrato, on what it takes to grow up in the NFL. Blah. Blah. Blah.
I am paraphrasing because I do not text while driving. If anyone knows how to get an audio file of Cerrato’s comments, please post it in “Comments” so that I can share it.
