Our best friends on the UC volleyball had a great weekend, even though it did not fair well for the men’s sports. The women went to Milwaukee for the Big East tournament, a tournament they had never won. They had an easy time with Villanova in the first round. The second game against Marquette saw them fall in a 0-2 hole. They came back to win set 3, and won set 4 rather easily. The ladies won 15-13 to push them into the final round against Notre Dame.
UC fell behind early in the first set, but they were able to rally on the Irish to take it home. UC jumped out a couple points on the second set, and that provided them enough cushin to take it down. The final set was back and forth the whole time. UC went up late, facing 2 championship points. Notre Dame spoiled them both though. UC got an ace on a serve, then Megan Turner nailed the kill shot for the Bearcats to win their first Big East title.
Missy Harpenau had herself a great tournament with 39 kills and 35 digs, including 7 and 12 yesterday. That earned her the Most Outstanding Player award. Well deserved.
Congratulations to all of the ladies, coach Reed Sunahara and the rest of his coaching staff. UC had been in the finals the last two years, but finally broke down the door and took it home. Bearcats Blog is happy and proud of you. When you think about it, all of the years that the volleyball team didn’t win were all of the years that they weren’t interviewed on this here site. Something to think about (*coughthecreditismineallminecough*). Kudos on a job well done.
