When you play hockey in your driveway or in the street in front of your house you dream about scoring the winning goal in the Stanley Cup final or maybe you dream about playing in the All Star Game.
Flyers forward Jakub Voracek will be making his first NHL All Star appearance this weekend and for him it is something that he has dreamed about since he was a kid.
‘I am really excited it is going to be fun,’ said Voracek. ‘It is something special that you dream of when you are a kid.’
So far this season Voracek is leading the league in points. He has 17 goals and 39 assists for a total of 56 points. ‘I never thought about him leading the league in scoring,’ said Flyers head coach Craig Berube. ‘I just thought about him playing good hockey and he has done that. He works extremely hard.’
Earlier this season he became the first Flyer since Chris Pronger in 2011 to record at least a point in each of the team’s first five games of the season. He finished last season with just 62 points, a number he should pass this year.
‘He is putting work in and he has simplified his game. He is shooting pucks and getting to the net,’ said Berube. ‘A guy like that who does the right things all the time is going to produce.’
Voracek and fellow Flyer All Star Glaude Giroux have been the offensive leaders this season for a team that is averaging less then 3 goals a game and is in the bottom half of the league standings.
‘I think we play our offense very well and we know what we expect from each other,’ said Voracek about playing with Giroux.
Berube likes to keep this pair together whenever he can. ‘They are a dangerous pair. They really work well off each other, both on the power play and the 5 on 5,’ said the head coach.
When the All Star break ends the Flyers will no doubt have a tough hill to climb if they want to make the playoffs.
‘We just have to find ways to win games as a team,’ said Voracek. ‘We have to stick to the game plan during games.’
The Flyers begin play after the All Star break with a 4 game home stand. It will be very important for them to win all 4 if they really want to make the playoffs.
