STORRS, Conn. – UConn fans, its time to get the vote out for Husky football senior walk-on John Yurek (Greencastle, Pa.) for the Fourth Annual College Football Rudy Award. Fans can review nominations and place their votes from December 1-13 at http://www.collegerudyawards.com/cfra-ballot.htm.

The award honors student-athletes who demonstrate exemplary character, courage, contribution and commitment to their team. These same traits were immortalized in the film “Rudy” and the story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger at Notre Dame.

Yurek joined the UConn team as a walk-on in 2007. He did not see any game action until this year as a member for the kickoff defensive team. He has excelled academically at UConn as a biological sciences major. Yurek has worked exceptionally hard as a walk-on player and member of the Scout Team.

As his career continued, he saw playing time for the first time as a member of the kickoff defensive team.

He was named to the 2009 Big East All-Academic Team and has volunteered and spent two weeks in Mississippi rebuilding houses in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He has also volunteered at children’s’ homes and schools as an athletic and academic mentor.
