And pretty much locks up his third 2nd place Cy Young Finish. If historical trends hold true, Wainwright will also be in the top 20 of NL MVP voting as well (same as 2010, 2013).
He’s had a pretty monster year:

With the Bears playing a nationally broadcast football game and the Cubs in the midst of another 90 loss season, the only people watching this 8-0 blowout were Cardinals fans.
And The Nation liked what it saw.
The aforementioned Wainwright went 7 innings, surrendering 0 runs. His season ERA now sits at 2.38 with 179 SOs and a WHIP of 1.03.
Offense was easy and often. Jon Jay led the charge with 3 RBIs, while 4 of his other teammates tallied at least one run batted in.
For a team that doesn’t tend to do things the easy way – this was easy.
The Pirates aren’t going to let the Birds clinch the NL Central amongst the thousands of well-appointed Cardinals fans in Wrigley field, though. Their 1-0 win against Atlanta means the Magic Number only drops 1 to 4.
The Cards are 8-2 in their last 10 and have drawn within 2 of evening their record on the road.
Well done.
