Here is what to expect for the next week as far as following your Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 620WDAE AM radio will be broadcasting live in the afternoon certain days with the Big Dog Steve Duemig, and at times he will be the ONLY eyes and ears for the rest of us, so tuning into 620 is highly advised. http://www.PewterReport.com is always second to none for the most up to date Camp Coverage, including reports on players, how they are doing, any big plays that have happened, who made them and what they mean to the rest of us! WHO ARE THE NEW BUCS? I like to call this current team the 5th generation of Bucs players; 1st- John McKay and Leeman Bennett’s teams from 76-86 2nd Ray Perkins and Richard ‘were gonna work on that’ Williamson from 87-91 3rd Sam Wyche era from 92-96 4th Pewter Era from 97 on up to the 2008 season under Jon Gruden. This 5th Generation Bucs team had a complete reworking done last year, and that job of rebuilding continues into year two, along with these new key players that will probably be around for the better part of the decade; GERALD MCCOY- Defensive Tackle- Oklahoma McCoy was the 3rd overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, and is the highest drafted interior lineman ever in franchise history! So the Bucs are serious about beefing up their Defensive line, and they knew 2010 was the year to do it. Among many accomplishments, McCoy a two time captain that started all 40 games during his career at Oklahoma, where he finished with 14.5 sacks and 21 QB pressures. He is an All American in many catagories, and he majored in Human Relations. That means he will be polite when he picks up QBs off the ground after sacking them. McCoy’s job is to become the next Warren Sapp, who dominated pro football from the same position and McCoy will be playing it to a tee. Lining up in the 3 technique, he will blast into the backfield and creat havoc, forcing errant or early throws, which usually result in turnovers when you are tossing those up against the Bucs secondary led by pro bowl threatening DBs Aqib Talib and Tanard Jackson. BRIAN PRICE -Defensive Tackle, UCLA Price was taken with the 35th overall pick in the draft, but was the Bucs 2nd round pick. He started the last 28 games of his career, where at UCLA his 44.5 tackles for loss is ranked second in team history. He will called on to take on the role of Nose Tackle or the left Defensive Tackle spot next to McCoy, something Brad Culppeper and/or Booger McFarland did back in the team’s glory days on defense. Price would probably respect my comparisons of him to former Bucs, as he is a History Major! With 97 tackles, 12.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles, including one Interception, I think he will make a lot of running backs and QBs history. ARRELIOUS BENN- Wide Receiver- Illinois Benn was drafted in the second round just behind Price with the 39th overall pick, part of the great scheme of things Mark Dominik and Bucs front office did instead of spending money on worn out free agents, they will be developing young players like Benn, who had a great career at Illinois despite the absence of a decent QB there. Benn started 35 of 37 games he played there, and ranked tied for fourth in Illinois history with 159 catches and 6th on the school’s all tiem receiving yards list with 2221! He is a leader too, as he was named a Captain as a Sophomore AND Junior. His 1,668 all purpose yards as a sophomore registered as the third best single season performance in school history. He majored in General Studies. He should generally take over the WR spot from Clayton on Day One. MYRON LEWIS- Cornerback- Vanderbilt Lewis was taken with the 67th overall pick in the NFL draft, in the Bucs 3rd round. He is the highest drafted DB from Vandy in the 2000s! His 10 picks tied for ninth in Vanderbilt’s all time records. Obviously intelligent to graduate from Vandy, he finished with a degree in human and organizational development. He should be able to organize quite a few Interceptions his way over the years! MIKE WILLIAMS- Wide Receiver- Syracuse Williams is probably one of the most intriguing picks as he lasted until the 4th round (101st overall ) due to problems with the program. Listen to him talk in an interview, and you just get the feeling the whole issue is behind him. The Orange were a terrible team, yet for him to come out with such great stats is a direct accomplishment on his part alone. Williams averaged 70.5 yards per game, 4th best in school history! His 133 catches rank 4th on the all time Orange books. He had a string of 27 straight games with at least one catch! He majored in Communication and Rhetorical studies. I wont even go there on rhetorical questions about his past, and how well he has communicated how they are behind him. Brent Bowden- Punter- Virginia Tech- Despite the disagreement of my former assistant over at Bucem, you DO draft kickers when they are good enough to be drafted, because those go on to become the elite of the elite more often than just “picking one up off waivers. Cody Grimm is a safety featured on NFL.com videos, Dekoda Watson is a linebacker out of Florida State, Erik Lorig a Defensive End from Stanford, and all three of these guys stand a great chance of making the team, not because of how bad the team is, but because of how good of a job Raheem Morris, Mark Dominik, Shelton Quareles and staff have done with their homework. GO BUCS, look forward to hearing all about these players and more in the coming weeks before Preseason games start!
