Wake Gets Win 198, Sox Take Series!

Tim Wakefield stumbled out of the gate and it looked like the knuckleball might not be knuckling last night, however we only needed to be patient and he’d snag his Red Sox career 198th win last night against the Blue Jays!

Wake gave up a single run in the 1st, but the Sox tied that up quick with a leadoff homerun from Jacoby Ellsbury.  Ells has definitely been showing he can hit for power at times this season since that is his 10th HR this year.  The Sox took the lead in the 2nd when Youk got into the HR game and smacked a ball to the Monster.  Unfortunately, Wake struggled in the 3rd and allowed two runs to score which gave the Jays back the lead 3-2.  However, Wake settled down after that and pitched 4 more scoreless innings.

The Red Sox got their bats all a workin’ in the 4th inning to give Wake the lead for good.  The Red Sox scored their 4 runs…all with 2 outs.  JD Drew doubled to get it started and was brought home by an RBI single from Darnell McDonald.  Salty hit a single and then Navarro got an RBI double to bring DMac home.  That was followed by a 2 run RBI double by Jacoby Ellsbury to give the Sox a 6-3 lead.

Both Ellsbury and Youkilis had HUGE nights at the plate.  Both players each had a homer and 2 doubles.  Yep, that’s getting it DONE!  When Wake left the mound, he was relieved by Bard for 2 outs in the 8th and then the rain became too much and the game went into a rain delay for 40 minutes.  Dan Wheeler took the mound when the game resumed at 10:05pm and K’d Hill to end the inning.  Papelbon took the mound in the 9th and seems to have this annoying habit lately of letting at least one run score.  He hit a batter, the runner took second and then came home on an RBI single from Escobar.  However that is all Pap would allow as he went on to strike out Thames to end the game.

Sox Win!  Yanks Lose!  So, we’re only a 1/2 game back.  Let’s Go Red Sox!
