Tim Wakefield showed he is 100% healthy and ready to be a big contributor to the Red Sox this season with a great performance today. Wake pitched five scoreless innings and only gave up two hits.
“I knew I was ready when I went to see the doctors at the end of January,” Wakefield said. “I kind of surprised them with my strength and where I was in my rehab. Then February came along, and I kept cruising. I kept getting stronger and stronger. I knew that when I got over here, that I was going to be 100 percent. I think I was.”
With Dice-K’s back issue the rotation is set for the start of the season, but Tito is still going to have to make a tough choice later on if everyone is healthy. Wakefield’s success this spring gives the Red Sox the luxury of bringing Matsuzaka back slowly. Wake’s solid performance also gives some healthy competition to the other starters. You couldn’t ask much more from the 43 year old pitcher.
