This offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles signed former Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants cornerback Walter Thurmond to a one-year contract. When Thurmond was signed, many fans thought that he would be playing on the opposite side of cornerback Byron Maxwell.
Then, in the NFL Draft, the Eagles addressed the secondary by drafting Utah’s Eric Rowe, Kansas’ JaCorey Shepherd, Kansas State’s Randall Evans and signing Coastal Carolina’s Denzel Rice as an undrafted free agent. But with the Eagles seemingly loaded at corner, it looks like Thurmond is making a name for himself at safety as they are looking for someone to play next to Malcolm Jenkins.
According to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, on Tuesday at OTAs, Kelly was once again singing the praises of Thurmond.
Here is what Kelly had to say about Thurmond:
“Walt’s done a really nice job. He’s probably been our most productive guy in the secondary in terms of pass breakups and strips and things like that. He always seems to be around the ball, so he seems like he’s fitting in there right now. But again, we still don’t have pads on, we’re still evaluating guys with helmets and shorts and T-shirts. But he’s been very productive so far.”
Kelly is right, in that they do not have pads on yet so you have to take everything with a grain of salt. But it is great to see Thurmond asserting himself, after only playing in two games last season with the Giants due to an injury.
