Afghanistan war claims life of Spurs’ physician son

U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Benjamin Schmidt, son of San Antonio Spurs team physician Dr. David Schmidt, was killed in Afghanistan earlier this week when he was shot by a sniper while on patrol.

San Antonio’s KSAT-TV’s Katrina Webber spoke with Dr. Schmidt, who called his son an awesome human being and a dedicated marine.

“He loved his job. He was proud to serve his country,” Schmidt said.

Lance Cpl. Schmidt, 24, had planned to leave the marines and become a history teacher. His family is still finalizing funeral plans, but before he left for Afghanistan, Schmidt said he wanted to be buried at Ft. Sam Houston.

Project Spurs sends its heartfelt condolences to Lance Cpl. Schmidt’s family for their loss and would like to thank Schmidt for his service defending the United States.
