C.J. McCollum is this draft’s mid-major standout. The 6’3 guard out of Lehigh dazzled during his college career as an offensive firecracker and his scoring prowess has caught the attention of NBA decision-makers.
McCollum gets the majority of his points from the perimeter, showing a level of comfort shooting either off the dribble or off the catch. This season, he averaged almost 24 points per game and shot better than 51.6 percent from beyond the arc. He played just 12 games this year due to a left foot injury, which cut short his final season in Bethlehem. But McCollum’s health is not a concern for those exploring his prospects ahead of this year’s draft.
What position he plays at the next level is a major question. McCollum has great scoring instincts, but he’s too undersized to play shooting guard in the NBA. However, the 21-year-old guard isn’t concerned about the tweener label. After his workout in Sacramento on Saturday, he told media he feels he can play anywhere in the backcourt.
I’m comfortable playing any position. I think it’ll be situational depending on where I’m drafted and what the roster is. But I’m comfortable with being a full-time point guard and I’m also comfortable going off the ball kind of like what Steph Curry does out there in Golden State. Just depends on the guard rotation if there’s a three-guard or two-guard rotation. But I’m fine either way.
Do the Kings really need to add another guard? If McCollum is the best player available when the Kings draft seventh, probably so. McCollum is bright and it shows in the way he handles himself in front of the media. For a team lacking players with high basketball IQ, McCollum’s intelligence would be a welcome addition to the Kings’ locker room.
Mike Schmitz, an assistant video coordinator for the D-League’s Bakersfield Jam and former contributor to TrueHoop Network affiliate Valley of the Suns, has been putting together video scouting reports of prospects for Draft Express the last two years.
