Clearly the powers that be in college football know the name of Chris Borland and more proof of that came on Monday morning as Borland was named to both the Butkus Award and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists. Overall Borland is now on FOUR watch lists to start the season.
The Butkus Award is given to the nation's best linebacker and the Rotary Lombardi Award is given to the bet player that fits this set of criteria:
– Be a down lineman, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, setting up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball at the time of snap.
– Be a linebacker on defense, setting up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
Borland was named to both sets of watch lists in 2012 but failed to go beyond the watch list stage in either award.
He wasn't the only one to get on a watch list today as he was joined on the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list by Ryan Groy. David Gilbert, although no longer a Badger and apparently playing for Miami was also named to the watch list.
No Badger has ever won the Butkus Award or the Rotary Lombardi Awards to date.
