Talks remain ongoing between the Sacramento Kings and representatives for third-year guard Jimmer Fredette on a potential buyout. Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro addressed media about the situation following shootaround this morning, stating that nothing is done at this point.
Reports surfaced today that the Kings were working on a deal to free the 25-year-year-old guard from the final year of his rookie contract. D’Alessandro said that Fredette’s representatives from Octagon initiated the talks with him on a potential release.
“He’s been a great player for this community and this team,” D’Alessandro said of Fredette. “And we want to do right by that player.”
In his three years with the Kings, Fredette has posted career-averages of 7.0 points, 1.5 assists and a true-shooting percentage of 53.2 percent.
“As a guy for your locker room, as a person, as an all around player, he definitely belongs in the NBA,” D’Alessandro said when asked Fredette’s long-term NBA potential. “Someone’s gonna get someone that will really help their team and we firmly believe that. When we get to that point, whether it’s now or at the end of the season, he’s gonna be a player in this league.”
He recorded a career-high 24 points against the New York Knicks on Feb. 12, but has played sparingly since. Fredette has not played due to coach’s decision in the Kings’ last two games. The Kings have made a conscious decision to give more minutes to rookie point guard Ray McCallum as the season comes to a close.
