NFL referees are often criticized, but they’re faced with the difficult task of calling games with players coming at full speed, which is not easy.
Not only that, even standing on the field puts them at risk of getting banged up, given that they’re often right in the middle of the action.
That’s exactly what happened to one official who was standing on the sideline during Sunday’s Rams-Bears game. The Bears were attempting to catch the Rams off guard on fourth-and-1, by trotting their punt team out there, only to have the offense run right back onto the field so they could try to run a play. One particular Bears player ran right into the official, though, knocking him down, and forcing the refs to briefly stop the game.

The ref appeared to be OK afterward, but the Bears’ attempt at trickery was thwarted, and they were forced to punt.
