Penn State will find out if its outstanding postseason continues today as quarterback Jake Waters announces his college choice at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time.
Waters, from Iowa Western Junior College, threw for 3,501 yards and 39 touchdowns this season. He had just three interceptions.
His decision comes down to Penn State and Kansas State. Waters visited the Manhattan, Kan. campus last weekend. He also received late interest from Texas and Alabama but had no scholarship offers from either of those schools.
Waters will have junior eligibility and enroll in school in Jan. Classes for the Penn State spring semester begin Jan. 7.
If Waters chooses Penn State it will have 18 verbal commits. Five of those, though, would be enrolling in Jan. and those actually count against the 2012 total. That means the 2013 total stands at 13 and there are still two scholarships that coach Bill O’Brien can hand out.
Waters, who is from Council Bluffs, Iowa, is 6-2, 215 pounds and runs a 4.6 40-yard dash. He completed 73% of his passes this season in leading his team to the NJCAA national championship.
According to Rivals.com, he is listed as a three-star dual-threat quarterback. He rushed for 256 yards this season with a 4.9 yards per carry.
247Sports has Waters rated as pro-style quarterback with a four-star rating while Scout.com has him rated as a three-star prospect.
The 2013 season will be his fourth season out of high school.
At St. Albert High in Council Bluffs, Waters was a three-sport star that led his football team to two state championships (2007, 2009). He threw for 5,288 yards and 70 touchdowns during his high school career. During his senior season, he threw for 1,779 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Waters was a member of Iowa Western’s 2010 recruiting class. According to his 2010 profile, he was 6-1, 185 pounds coming out of high school.
During his 2011 season at Iowa Western, he completed 63% of his passes for 2,659 yards and 30 touchdowns. He threw seven interceptions.
According to the Iowa Western website, he also completed six of 10 passes in two games during the 2010 season before an injury forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
