Because the state of Minnesota is grossly maladjusted in their perspective as to what the caliber of their college basketball program is, they were disappointed that the Gophers only won their first tournament game since 1997. And even then, the win in 1997 was mired in academic scandal. The last clean tournament win was 20 years ago!
The Gophers were awful for 6 years under Dan Monson, and they were cheaters under Clem Haskins. Tubby Smith came into town and started winning 20 games a year and making post season tournaments regularly. And now Tubby Smith has been fired. He was the best clean coach the team has had in a very long time, but he was run out of town.
Only local media and fans are saying this is a good, whereas the national media seems to have a negative perspective on the situation. This should be telling. This is what the rest of the country thinks of the Gophers’ program. The only thing going for it, according to many across the country, was Tubby Smith.
Good luck finding a new coach, Minnesota, but the tough part will be remaining relevant.
(Sidebar. How can Tubby Smith, who finds his own players and coaches them AND has a postseason victory in the last 6 years get run out of town, whereas all Ron Gardenhire has to do is coach, and hasn’t got anything exceptional out of his players, and been a postseason flop since 2004 is revered? I don’t get it)
