Happy Thursday Cougs, as we get rolling on this AM's morning post.
So yesterday, someone commented on Facebook that the whole "Morning Drip" name was essentially lame, or maybe the worst idea ever. Per our Facebook page:
John Mullen Is it just me or is the Title "Wazzu Morning Drip" the worst title line ever? Especially for sports reporting? C'mon!
You know what? It's not just you. He's right. The "Drip" idea was always meant as something tongue-in-cheek if you want to know the truth, sort of a shot at ourselves and also to convey something about a morning post, and the drip relates to the idea of coffee…? Anyway, suggestions are always welcome for some other name for a morning links-style post. Morning Drip? Rise and Grind? Feel free to offer advice, we are always open to new ideas.
Moving on to this morning's links…
There is a really good read on WSU incoming frosh Isaac Dotson from the Seattle Times from the other day, yet I failed to mention it (whoops!). Dotson was just named the Seattle Times High School Male Athlete of the Year, which is pretty cool. But the article itself goes into some details about the kind of kid Dotson happens to be, and it is refreshing to get something positive on the WSU side of the ledger when it comes to the Times. Not that the paper goes out of it's way to squash all-things-Coug, but still it's rare when there is high praise coming from that direction. So we'll take it!
Dotson was recruited as an "athlete", but, the article mentions some other reports out there that he will be given an opportunity to compete at QB. He definitely has the size and athleticism to bring an extra element to the position (6-3, 210), and I for one would really wonder what a legit dual threat QB might look like in the Air Raid? QB's under Mike Leach haven't exactly been in that Russell Wilson or Colin Kaepernick mold, where they always have that ability to just tuck it and run while the world collapses around them! But it might be a real interesting element when you think about the idea of Leach and company giving serious consideration to mixing in the pistol offense as well? Whatever happens, Dotson sounds like a great kid and will definitely be one to watch as his Coug career unfolds.
Speaking of QB's, I know this is outdated a bit but Athlon's listed their Top 10 QB's on the hotseat for 2013. Not just the specific conferences, but for all of college football. And guess who showed up on the list??
Per the article:
Halliday isn’t guaranteed the starting job, as redshirt freshman Austin Apodaca and true freshman Tyler Bruggman will have an opportunity to push for time this preseason. Halliday showed some flashes of promise last year, including four performances of at least 300 passing yards. If the Cougars want to contend for a bowl game, Halliday needs to take command of the offense and show he’s the No. 1 quarterback this spring.
Not a huge surprise really, and certainly something that Coug fans are talking about/posting about/whatever. But interesting that the whole situation is at least on the "national" radar? With Halliday's 13 INT's last year and low completion percentage that is less-than-ideal when you throw the ball so much (52% completion percentage when you throw it 50 or so times a game isn't ideal), let's hope Halliday is ready to take a step forward.
That's it for a light morning. Enjoy the great NW weather (for now), and of course, GO COUGS!
