Allen Webster struggled and looked totally overwhelmed in his last start, but he was able to put that behind him in his start against the Angels last night. Webster was up against Jered Weaver of the Angels who hasn’t had a loss since June. Webster did his job for the Sox and was able to get his first road win of the season.
The game stayed scoreless until the 3rd inning when the Sox got on the scoreboard first. Pedroia hit an RBI single to score Vazquez and then Cespedes hit a 2 run RBI double to score Holt and Pedey. Getting three runs against someone like Weaver is like winning the lottery, but Webster was going to have to pitch well enough for it to hold up. Webster did give two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, but the Sox were able to leave the inning still holding on to the lead. Iannetta hit a double and then Navarro came home to score on a throwing error by Cespedes. The Angels scored their 2nd run of the inning when Trout hit an RBI sac fly. Sox 3-2.
In the 5th the Sox were able to get one of those runs back when Mike Napoli hit a solo HR off his former teammate Weaver. Webster took the mound in the 7th and this outing definitely showed some promise and that he might be the kind of player who could be in the mix for the rotation in 2015. With two outs in the inning Farrell decided to go to the bullpen. Webster pitching line for the night was 84 pitches, 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 3 Ks. Tommy Layne got the last out of the 7th inning and then handed the ball over to Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa had a scoreless inning and then Koji Uehara took to the mound to finish it off in the 9th. Koji looked like he was in trouble when Kendrick hit what looked like would be a no doubt double, but then Jackie Bradley Jr continue to dazzle the leather with one of the best catches he has made all season. Freese followed that up with a double to have Bradley Jr’s catch have even more value. Koji struggled through the inning, but he was able to get the 3 outs to secure the first win of the series.
