The Red Sox were hoping that they might be able to go on a little bit of a magical run with their rookie pitchers taking the mound night after night. With Ranaudo putting on a good show on Friday, it didn’t seem like as much of a pipe dream, but with Allen Webster on the mound on Saturday it showed that the Sox still have a lot of hiccups and lessons in front of them in the 2014 season. Webster was taking the mound for his 2nd start in 2014 and he wouldn’t end up not lasting long due to his control and command issues.
The Red Sox were the ones who jumped out to an early lead in the game yesterday. In the 2nd Yoenis Cespedes came to the plate for the first time in a Red Sox uniform. Cespedes hit a single to left in his inaugural at bat. Cespedes was followed by Mike Napoli who hit a towering homerun to the Monster that I am still not sure if it has landed yet. Wowzers. Sox 2-0. The Sox scored their 3rd run of the inning when Christian Vazquez hit an RBI single to center. Sox 3-0.
Unfortunately for the Sox, Webster would end up giving those runs and then some right back to the Yankees in the 3rd inning. Webster began the 3rd by walking the bases loaded without recording an out. The Yankees got on the board when Jeter hit a 2 run RBI double and then the Yanks tied the game when Ellsbury hit an RBI sac grounder. All 3 of the runners that Webster walked came in to score. The Yankees were able to take the lead when Carlos Beltran hit an RBI single to score Jeter. Webster then walked 2 more batters to once again have the bases loaded and Farrell had enough. Webster was out of the game and Burke Badenhop was in to stop the bleeding. Badenhop got the final out of the inning, but the damage was done and the Yankees were now out in front. Sox 3-4.
Badenhop pitched another scoreless inning in the 4th and then handed the ball over to Craig Breslow in the 5th. Breslow started the inning by giving the Yankees an insurance run when Mark Teixeira hit a leadoff homerun. Sox 3-5. Alex Wilson who was just called up from Pawtucket came to the mound and pitched a scoreless 6th inning. Wilson was still on the mound in the 7th, but was unable to put up another zero on the scoreboard. The Yankees scored their 6th and final run when the former Sox Stephen Drew hit an RBI double to score Beltran. Drew would end up being the 3rd out of the inning when he thought there were 3 strikes instead of 2 and ended up being tagged out when he ran off 2nd base, but the Yankees were still up 3 runs in the late innings. The Sox were able to grab a run in the bottom of the 7th when Ortiz hit a fly ball to shallow left and Brock Holt took the daring move to try to score from 3rd base. The throw beat Holt to the plate, but it was off line so Holt was able to get in there safely. Sox 3-6. Wilson was still on the mound in the 8th and got one out before handing the ball over to lefty Tommy Layne. Layne got the 2 outs to end the 8th and one out in the 9th before Edward Mujica took the mound. Mujica got the 2 outs he needed and then the last hope would be for the Sox offense to get something going against Yankees closer David Robertson. Unfortunately the Sox were not able to get anything going against Robertson and the Sox fell 3-6. The Sox will take to the field in the 8pm ESPN game on Sunday in hopes of taking the series with a win.
