Wednesday Links – Lane Kiffin to USC, Emergency Stops Game in Memphis, John Beilein Signs Contract Extension, & Charles Woodson Is Defensive Player of Year

A bit of a rough day so far at D4L headquarters, which is why the interns found me this funny video to cheer me up. Ok, so we don’t really have interns due to insurance complications. But if we did, they would definitely look like this.

  • Big, big news from L.A.: Lane Kiffin has agreed to become the next head coach at USC. Kiffin spent a year at Tennessee after coaching the Oakland Raiders. Overall, this is a good hire by USC: a big name in timely fashion to erase negative publicity from Carroll’s departure and the pending NCAA investigations/sanctions. That being said, the rest of the Pac-10 is probably happy about this hire. The bright side for the rest of us? We may get to see more of Layla Kiffin on national TV. She didn’t seem too happy in Tennessee orange anyway.

  • Michigan basketball coach John Beilein signed a contract extension on Monday that will keep him on the Crisler arena sidelines through the 2015-16 season. Beilein has expressed his desire to be a Wolverine4lyfe, and at 56 (57 next month), this extension likely guarantees that Ann Arbor is his last coaching stop before retirement.
  • In completely unrelated news, this message (also below) was displayed on the Grizzlies’ scoreboard during the aforementioned Fire Alarm Game because… well, it was a Clippers-Grizzlies game. I don’t think I need to explain further.

Rob’s Highlight of the Day
Gunslinger Hedo Turkoglu tosses a perfect lob to DeMar DeRozan straight from the holster, and DeRozan finishes it off nicely. The level of difficulty on that pass is off the charts, especially for a guy not named Steve Nash. [via Ball Don’t Lie]
