Yeah, so Kool & the Gang didn’t give us the laughs like Boise State’s cowbell girl, but at least we’re not making fun of blind people this morning. Celebrate by checking out your Wednesday links, or Gilbert Arenas will put a gun in your face. [pic via Ball Don’t Lie]
- It’s official. Mike Shanahan will be the next coach of the Washington Redskins after the two parties agreed on contract terms Tuesday. Make sure to check out Hogs Haven, SB Nation’s Redskins site, for 3 reasons why the ‘Skins are relevant again.
- Looks like Scott Boras got his way. Matt Holliday re-signed with the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, slapping his John Hancock on a 7-year, $120 million contract. Yahoo’s poorly-worded article reports that Holliday’s contract requires him to hit behind Albert Pujols and play left field, while ESPN makes no such claims. Looking for some opinion on the matter? Cardinals Diaspora, Bloguin’s STL site, and Viva El Birdos have you covered.
- Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Michigan has decided to hire a pizza guy as their new athletic director. Sarcasm aside, the Wolverines will welcome Domino’s CEO David Brandon, a Michigan alum, to their State St. offices next November. Video of MGoBlue’s interview with Brandon is here, but it sounds like Brandon is taking advice from another guy with two first names.
- Big news from Arizona: The Big Unit is retiring. Randy Johnson will hang up his spikes after scaring the shit out of hitters for 22 seasons. There’s little question that he’s going to be in the Hall of Fame. If he’s not, he’ll stare down the baseball writers who refused to vote for them until they crack. My favorite Randy Johnson moment is when he made John Kruk pee himself during the 1993 All-Star game.
- I know it’s early, and I promise to leave the NFL draft alone for a while after this (pending big news), but Todd McShay has released his updated mock draft now that we know what the pick order will be. Check out the video below for his top 5 picks. Turf Show Times, SB Nation’s St. Louis Rams blog, debates whether the Rams should trade the #1 pick.
- The Chicago Bears took a hint from their buddies in Buffalo and fired several coaches yesterday, including offensive coordinator Ron Turner. Head coach Lovie Smith and head dumbass Rod Marinelli were both retained. I like the move of keeping Smith. He’s done a lot of good things while at the helm in Chicago and deserves another year to develop Jay Cutler. Midway Illustrated, Bloguin’s Bears blog, has all the details in their end-of-season updates.
- I’m still not sure what to make of this, but ESPN is going 3-D. I’m still not sure how it’s going to work, but if it looks anything like Avatar did, I’m excited. Unfortunately, James Cameron doesn’t work for ESPN, so I’m taking a wait-and-see approach.
- The Detroit Free Press published an entertaining interview with Deadspin’s Dashiell Bennett, a Michigan State graduate. Dash dishes about what it’s like to bash overpaid, lazy sportswriters like Rick Reilly for a living. I’d like to throw Bill Simmons and the writers on Around the Horn into that list. Not to say I don’t love them on ATH, but their columns suck.
- Holy shit, I need to get a Wii. ESPN reports that EA Sports will make NBA Jam for the Wii some time in the near future. My girlfriend is going to be so pissed. [via NBA Fanhouse]
Rob’s Highlight of the Day
Danilo Galinari of the New York Knicks dunks on Indiana Pacers big man Roy Hibbert. My favorite part is Gallo’s pause after landing, probably because he’s never dunked on anyone before. [via Ball Don’t Lie]
