Let’s talk about the Big Ten Network as the conference held its annual Media Day yesterday. Herb Gould of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the dispute between the channel and Comcast is “approaching halftime.” The Peoria (IL) Journal Star picks up a news service story about Big Ten Commish Jim Delaney insisting BTN be on expanded basic. Shannon Shelton of the Detroit Free Press says there won’t be any expansion of the Big Ten. Doug Desmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer also writes about the Big Ten wanting its channel on expanded basic. Mark Tupper in the Journal Gazette and Times Courier of Southern Illinois says the Big Ten Network is willing to negotiate price, but channel placement is non-negotiable. Shannon Ryan of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that BTN isn’t available in her city either. Brad Bauer of the Marietta (OH) Times says the local cable company isn’t picking up BTN leaving many Ohio State fans in the dark. Bob Baptist in the Columbus Dispatch says 80% of cable subscribers in the Big Ten region won’t be able to watch BTN if the season started today. Todd Porter of the Canton Repository says local fans shouldn’t count on seeing Ohio State games in his city as well. John McPoland of the Janesville (WI) Gazette has an article describing the BTN. In his blog, Neil Best of Newsday writes an entry about the rumors of ESPN getting back into the NHL. William Houston in the Toronto Globe and Mail has more about this story. In his blog in the Palm Beach Post, Brian Biggane says the NHL returning to ESPN will correct a huge mistake.
In his blog that focuses on High Definition TV, Phil Swann says Comcast will add the NFL Network in HD in selected cities. And fans who live in Canton won’t be able to see the annual NFL Hall of Fame Game this Sunday because the NFL Network has picked it up.
Former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine will be the subject of an ESPN documentary.
Lindsay Butler of the East Valley (AZ) Tribune says ESPN will host two parties during Super Bowl week in Scottsdale.
Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star says Canadian soccer fans will have to pay if they want to see a majority of English Premier League games.
