The Redskins lost a bidding war with the New York Jets, if there ever was one, for WR Santonio Holmes. Holmes agreed to a $50 million contract, $24 million guaranteed, to remain with the Jets who are attempting to buy a championship. (We all know how that turns out.)The Jets are said to be seriously courting CB Nnamde Asomugha who is often tied to Washington for no other reason than the Redskins are known for chasing names. The Jets’ interest in Asomugha may just be a fling, but the Redskins never had a real chance for Holmes. No way the Jets were going to lose him.
If the Redskins couldn’t get Holmes, maybe they could get three receivers who together add up to Holmes.
Washington reached agreement free agent wide-outs Donte’ Stallworth and Brandon Stokley and traded DE Jeremy Jarmon to Denver for WR Jabar Gaffney (Guess Denver wouldn’t give up Brandon Lloyd). Stallworth (30) and Stokley (35) agreed to one-year contracts. I can’t help thinking “Willie Parker” and “Larry Johnson” when I read “Stallworth” and “Stokley.”
Parker and Johnson were added to inject preseason competition at running back. I doubt the Shanahans are sending messages to Santana Moss. These signings must be messages to younger receivers not named Anthony Armstrong (Mostly looking at you, Malcolm Kelly).
I am more surprised that the ‘Skins traded Jarmon than that they added Gaffney. I’m declaring Jarmon the first casualty of adding DE Brandon Cofield to the roster.
Gaffney’s 2010 performance was nearly perfect for a No. 2 wide receiver. He had 65 receptions for 875 yards, but only two touchdowns. My benchmark for No. 2 receivers on the 6-7-8 scale is 60+ receptions, 7 touchdowns, and 800 yards. Gaffney is the guy I expect to see on the roster next season. Age (30) is an issue.
News out of Baltimore says the ‘Skins and ex-Ravens CB Josh Wilson agreed to a three year, $13 million, $9 million guaranteed, deal. Wilson’s presence means Carlos Rogers is a goner. Yeah, but can Wilson catch? He had three interceptions last year, one more than Rogers.
The Redskins added QB Kellen Clemens to the roster on a one year contract. I got nothin’.
Word is that Donovan McNabb and the Minnesota Vikings have worked out the numbers to allow the Vikes to fit No. 5 under their salary cap. Raise your hand if you thought McNabb had any trade value after that soap opera season last year.
Liar. Liar. Pants on fire.
UPDATE: Brandon Stokley’s agent says the player has backed away from the Redskins deal. The agent gives “too many wide receivers” signed by the Redskins as the reason. Um, OOPS?
