Another week, another Eagles loss. The Philadelphia Eagles lost their seventh straight game to the Carolina Panthers by the final score of 30-22.
The Eagles offense saw early struggles as they were without starting quarterback, Michael Vick, for the second straight game. The Eagles saw their usual redzone troubles early. Quarterback, Nick Foles threw two ill-advised passes that were both nearly picked off. The Eagles were able to walk away with three points off an Alex Henery field goal. Foles finished with a disappointing game finishing 16/21 for 119 yards and no touchdowns.
The Eagles were able to establish success in the running game in the first half. With Pro Bowl running back, Lesean McCoy, out with a concussion, Bryce Brown got the start with Dion Lewis backing him up. Brown gained major yardage on his attempts including an impressive 65 yard touchdown run. Brown wasn’t done there as he ran in his second touchdown from 5 yards out after a 51 yard pass interference call.
Brown would finish the game setting the new Eagles single game rookie rushing record with 178 yards.
While Bryce Brown saw rushing success, he did experience problems with turnovers fumbling the ball twice in the game.
The Eagles defensive secondary got off to an atrocious start. In Carolina’s first drive, confusion in secondary coverage led to a Cam Newton 24 yard wide-open touchdown completion to Gary Barnidge. On the Panthers’ next drive, Cam Newton completed yet another wide open touchdown pass to Brandon Lafell, this time for 43 yards. Both touchdowns showed a great lack of communication within the Eagles secondary.
Cam Newton not only saw success in the passing game but also in the running game as well. The Eagles defense had trouble containing the Panthers’ quarterback as he made key rushes including 2 redzone touchdown rushes. Newton finished the game 18/28 with 306 yards and two passing touchdowns as well as 52 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Late in the third quarter, the Eagles defense showed signs of life as they provided consecutive stops against Cam Newton and the Panthers offense. Even after a Bryce Brown fumble gave the Panthers excellent field position, the Eagles defense still held the Panthers to a field goal.
The defensive revival would not last long as three straight off sides penalties put the Panthers in position for a Cam Newton rushing touchdown. Pressure set in even more for the defense as they had to make up for a Brandon Boykin fumble on a kickoff return.
This Sunday, the Eagles look to get on the road of .500 as they travel to Dallas to take on the division rival Cowboys who suffered a Thanksgiving loss to RGIII and the Washington Redskins. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 pm.
