After losing to the Seattle Seahawks on the road last week, the Philadelphia Eagles returned home to the friendly confines of Lincoln Financial Field to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Eagles, who came into tonight’s game undefeated at home, played flat and ultimately lost to the Packers 27-13.
The scoring in the game started off quickly as the Packers’ offense on their opening drive, scored a touchdown in only 10 plays. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers found wide receiver Davante Adams for a 12-yard touchdown reception.
With the Packers getting on the board first, it was time for the Eagles’ offense to respond, which they did. Quarterback Carson Wentz and the offense engineered an 11-play, 81-yard scoring drive, where wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham had four receptions for 53 yards.
Wentz finished off the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown, which was the first of his career to tie the game up at 7-7.
However, Rodgers and the Packers’ offense got the ball back towards the end of the opening quarter and put together another long drive ending in another Adams’ touchdown. This time, Rodgers hit Adams in stride for a 20-yard score, somehow placing the ball in a tight window, where only Adams could make a play.
After both teams traded punts in the middle of the first half, Wentz and company, put together another strong drive to end the first half, leading to a Caleb Sturgis’ 48-yard field goal. On that final drive before halftime, Wentz showed off his mobility picking up a key first down on 3rd and 6.
The Eagles went into the half down 14-10 but received the ball first to begin the second half. However, as they were driving down the field, with running back Wendell Smallwood picking up back to back first downs, Wentz made a critical mistake.
Wentz threw his third interception of the season as he was looking for tight end Zach Ertz but overthrew him and the ball ended up in the hands of Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. After the Clinton-Dix interception, Rodgers hit Adams for a 50-yard pass with Eagles cornerback Leodis McKelvin draped all over him for another Packers’ first down.
Despite that long pass play, the Eagles’ defense held their ground and forced Packers kicker Mason Crosby to make a 33-yard field goal. Crosby made the field goal, however, increasing Green Bay’s lead to 17-10.
With 8:48 left to go in the third quarter, the Eagles’ offense did not go quietly as Wentz got running backs Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner involved in the passing game. The duo helped the Eagles march down the field, but once again, the Packers’ defense stood tall as Sturgis made a 50-yard field goal to cut into Green Bay’s deficit.
Finally, after Sturgis’ field goal, Rodgers and the Packers’ offense controlled the ball for most of the fourth quarter as fullback Aaron Ripkowski scored a one-yard rushing touchdown and Crosby made another a field goal. The Packers more than covered, as predicted at The Sports Geek.
The Eagles are now 5-6 on the season as they suffered their first loss at home. They will now take their talents back on the road to play the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
