The Wisconsin softball team fell to Northwestern in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon, 8-3, at Madison’s Goodman Diamond.

The score was 1-0 in favor of the Wildcats until the fifth inning, when NU extended its lead with six runs, including a three-run homer from pinch-hitter Amy Letourneau. The Badgers (14-12, 3-3 Big Ten) began their rallying efforts at the bottom of the fifth, cutting their deficit to four at 7-3 before Northwestern (14-18, 2-4) scored an insurance run in the sixth to secure the win.

Although she was replaced in the fifth inning, sophomore Amanda Najdek recorded the loss at the mound, falling to 3-1 on the year. Junior Shannel Blackshear led the Badgers offense, going 1-for-2 with two RBI, while sophomore Mary Massei and junior Molly Spence recorded one run each.

Four current or former Badgers made the final roster for the U.S. Women’s National Team as announced on Sunday. The team, which has been training since March 25, will look to win its fourth straight title during the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championship from April 7-14 in Burlington, Vt.

2012 Patty Kazmaier Award winner Brianna Decker is the sole current Badger to return to the team. Former Badgers Hilary Knight (2007-09, 2010-12), Erika Lawler (2005-09), and Jessie Vetter (2005-09) have also been named to the roster after all playing on the world championship-winning team in 2011.
