It was announced on Monday that Rickie Weeks’ wrist injury requires surgery and that he will be lost for the year…more sad than usual, as Weeks was having the best season of his career.
Weeks’ loss now raised three questions that skipper Ken Macha needs to decide:
1. Who will be his everyday second baseman now?
2. Who will replace Weeks as the leadoff hitter?
3. Who will take Weeks spot on the 25-man roster?
Macha answered the first two questions a bit on Monday evening–Craig Counsell started at second and batted leadoff. No idea yet if this will be Macha’s permanent solution or not…I suppose it will depend who gets called up.
Two players in Nashville could be called up to take Weeks’ place–Hernan Iribarren or Alcides Escobar–Iribarren has played second, while Escobar is the Sounds’ shortstop.
But the Brewers may call up–Tony Gwynn, Jr. Why? Because, when they sent down outfielder Brad Nelson, they called up infielder Mat Gamel…so the Crew is only playing with four outfielders now.
We should find out later today who will get the call.
