One of the few players I was willing to see the Rangers give up some young prospects for at the trade deadline this past season was Florida center Stephen Weiss. Well, Saturday Larry Brooks at the New York Post wondered if Glen Sather would attempt to acquire Weiss in the offseason if the Blueshirts can’t sign Brad Richards.
Weiss had 21g, 28a with no offensive talent around him in Florida last year. And at 28 years of age he is just coming into his prime. Weiss has two years left on his contract that pays him $3.1 million per.
…to be honest, I would rather the Rangers look to trade for Weiss over signing Richards. I’d be willing to give up a prospect (Valentenko? Horak?) and a pick to bring in Weiss.
…with the Rangers in desperate need for a center as well as playmaking ability on the power play (Weiss had 16 pp assists last year), Weiss would be a real nice addition to the Rangers team next season.
