What Do You Want To See? Ohio State vs. Penn State

I love Penn State week because I don’t like Penn State and I love beating the Nittany Lions. OSU has done a lot of that lately.

I love to see it. What else do we want to see?

A quick start would be nice to see – I know they are coming off a big high of beating Wisconsin last week in a very emotional game, but the Bucks need to come out strong and not let Penn State get into the game and let the crowd stick around. We need to put them away early.
Air ball – I want to see the wide receivers finally get on track and catch some meaningful balls. Curtis Samuel and Dontre Wilson do not count.

No room to run – I want to see the Buckeyes shut down Saquon Barkley to under 100 yards after last season’s 194 yard effort.

Shocker – I would also love to see Illinois shock the world against Michigan. 🙂

Make them take off the white – Leave little doubt early in the game. Do not let them hang around and force OT this time. Give the fans a reason to give up early and go back out to the hill and drink.

Spread the wealth – I know I am beating a dead horse here, but spreading the ball around makes it more difficult to defend and if Wisconsin threw everything in after a bye week, imagine what Penn State will do. The more the merrier and they cannot get stuck in a Barrett and Samuel show.

Be a play calling genius – I know this seems an awful lot like the above topic, but it really isn’t (wink, wink). Please be a little more versatile on the offensive play calling this week. Someone (TTUN) will figure out how to stop Barrett and Samuel. Give them a reason to think they can’t.

Tempo – Start strong and fast, and carry that tempo through the game. The last two weeks it seems like we have tried to force certain things, but the tempo this team likes and is built to go with has been missing.

Play calling – We know and agree we need to have certain things happen to be successful. Samuel needs touches. Weber needs touches. Barrett needs to throw a certain number of passes. But finding the right blend of these things is key. And while I am a supporter of playing the hot hand, you need the other guys to get touches, as this opens up those hot players more. JT being strong in the passing game opens up running lanes for all listed above. Weber running up the middle opens Samuel up outside the guards, etc. etc.

Make it Hurt – Penn State likes to fancy itself as a legit rival of the Buckeyes, but besides Wikipedia, PSU folks are the only people in the country that does. It’s time to teach them a lesson that they are far from being in Ohio State’s class, let alone their rivals

Bonus – Have a great day from the D-line, so Coach Larry Johnson can enjoy his return to Happy Valley.

Keep the Undefeated Streak – Urban Meyer is 5-0 against Penn State during his career and when you are a man above the line like Meyer, you have to do everything you can to dominate the program that considers themselves unrivaled. Especially when you are 20-0 in true road games during your tenure at Ohio State.

Run Samuel, Run Weber, Run Everyone – The Penn State defense has given up more rushing yards this season than Illinois and Maryland. Their 1,253 rushing yards given up is 12th best in the Big Ten Conference. Runners have averaged 4.82 yards per carry. The key to the game without a doubt is controlling the game through running the football. The Penn State defensive line has given up 6.35 yards per carry in losses.  915 of those 1,253 yards have been given up when they are either tied with an opponent or losing.

Force McSorley into throwing situations on third down – The dual-threat quarterback has struggled all season on third and long to convert. The Virginia prep star has completed just 45 percent of his passes on third down and more than 10 to go.

Sack attack for the OSU defensive line – Let’s continue the tradition of getting to the quarterback throughout the second half of the season. Last week it was Sam Hubbard, Nick Bosa, Jalyn Holmes and Tyquan Lewis recording sacks. This week I’m going Hubbard, Bosa, Lewis and Dre’Mont Jones.
