Mike Williams takes a route into the endzone, Josh Freeman throws the fade pass, and Detroit DB Nathan Vasher is all over him. Yes both guys have a right to the football, but what happened to the old rule, you dont touch a wide receiver after he goes past the 5 yard mark? How did an absolute mugging be required for pass interference anyways?
Click Here to Watch the Video FULL size At the heart of the matter was the pass interference call against Kellen Winslow Jr in the 4th quarter when former official Mike Pierra who now works for Fox had come out and said this was a bad call. The DB had his back to the quarterback, and he initiated the contact to begin with. He not only initiates the contact, he latches on for dear life, and forces Winslow to push him off before he could stick his hands out so he could catch the ball.
Click Here to Watch the Video FULL size Pass Interference makes its way into the record books back in the 1978 season, when the NFL decided to open up the game a little bit, and not let defensive backs have their way with Wide Recievers. Back in this time, you could do whatever you wanted; full muggings were just fine! This is the same year the NFL went from a 14 game schedule to a 16 one. Sound coincidental? The league wanted offenses to score more points, so they made it illegal for a DB to interfere with a pass when the ball is in the air. Somehow, over time, this has changed to what we have today, where jockying and positioning are the norm, and none of that was ever in the designs of the spirit of the rule. Your allowed to contact someone within 5 yards, after that, you should not have contact with them at all. That’s simply not the case anymore, and in the offseason, the pass interference rule along with ‘when is a catch a catch when it goes to the ground’ a rule should be looked at during the summer meetings. Chris Houston here is simply caught red handed with this, well, red hands all over Mike Williams. Your either allowed to touch a receiver or your not, the NFL is going to have to make up its mind on what is ok and what isnt, preferably after the NFL makes up its mind to play football next year!
