What They're Saying About Dale Murphy

Given his body of work both on and off the field, inducting Dale Murphy into The Hall of Very Good™ was a no brainer.  Getting people to talk about his inclusion was easy.

Here’s a smattering of what they had to say.

ESPN SweetSpot Blogger Dave Schoenfield:  “The way I remember it, Dale Murphy’s opposite-field power was a big part of his MVP seasons of 1982 and 1983, when he hit 36 home runs both years. This was back before nearly every hitter crowded the plate and had muscled up and could easily hit one out the other way. But with his size and long arms Murphy could still drive the ball to right field. Baseball in the ‘80s will be remembered in part for the drug scandals, but Murphy represents the best of the decade: A class act and a great player.”

John Thorn, Official Historian for Major League Baseball:  “Many have observed that Dale Murphy was a greater player than many in the Baseball Hall of Fame, a sentiment with which I fully concur.”

Baseball Bloggers Alliance President Bill Ivie:  “As a young man, I had the opportunity to meet Dale Murphy outside of Busch Stadium while he was as a member of the Braves. Murphy took time to sign a card and stand around talking to me for a few minutes. Before I met him, I was sure he would be a Hall of Famer. After meeting him and seeing this great star take time to talk baseball with a fan of the opposing team, I have no doubt that Cooperstown is where he belongs. He helped a young man continue to develop his love of the game and for that I am grateful.  The Hall of Very Good welcomes a truly great individual on and off the field.”
