After putting together four consecutive wins, one against a top 25 team, the Penn State Nittany Lions now turn their attention to Iowa this Saturday.
The team had a bye this week and took advantage of the opportunity to get a few key players healthy and caught up on their schoolwork. They now face a new challenge in Iowa this weekend. The Hawkeyes are coming off a momentum building win against Michigan State this past weekend.
The mood in Happy Valley is one in which only the students and diehards thought possible. Their team is winning, their new head coach is leading in Coach of the Year voting and the preseason doubt has turned into midseason optimism.
After the first six games, it is safe to say we have learned a lot about this Penn State football team. Here are some things that have stood out so far.
Bill O’Brien took over for the Nittany Lions just a few short months ago. He has brought a new system along with new hope to a football program that seemed shattered. The first year head coach has led inspired players into battle week after week. He has endured NCAA sanctions, watched star players leave the team and yet, he continues to lead this football program. Bill O’Brien is the right man for Penn State Football.
Matt McGloin has come a long way from the half starter he was just a year ago. Penn State fans have a renewed sense of confidence with the senior signal-caller handling the offense. After watching McGloin march down the field for game winning drives, the Penn State faithful cannot get enough of him. He has only thrown two interceptions this season compared to 12 touchdowns. Matt McGloin can play quarterback at a very high level.
Perhaps the most notable player on this Penn State roster is Michael Mauti. The midseason All-American has led the defense both on and off the field. The Nittany Lion defense has been exceptional through the first six games of the season. They are in the face of the opposing quarterback, they are shooting through the hole to stop the run, they are changing what it means to be an aggressive. This defense will not back down from a challenge.

The first six games are in the books, and looking back it couldn’t have gone better for the Nittany Lions. After a rough start, we have learned a lot about this team. While there is still a long way to go this season, Penn State fans certainly have a lot to be excited about looking forward.
