The last preseason game is becoming more and more meaningless and I don’t believe its a coincidence it comes at the same time the NFL is pushing for 18 game seasons. Yet if you looked carefully enough, you will see signs; things to look for in the last game played by mostly 3rd and 4th stringers.

The offensive line played with a lot of backups, but some of those players like Patrick Omameh and Oniel Cousins were/are slated to be starters in the NFL, and they gave QB Mike Kafka no time in the pocket to set up, against other 3rd and 4th stringers for Washington. Very disappointing for Bucs fans and coaches alike to see that mess on the field.
Rookie Guard Kadeem Edwards is going to need a full year on the practice squad before he can be re-evaluated next season.

Another rookie disturbing the Bucs realm is WR Robert Herron, who shows the ability to separate, but not being able to catch the ball, which by name alone, seems to be the primary purpose of the position. With word still to come on the condition of former Gator Louis Murphy who visibly hurt his back after a catch on the sideline, Chris Owusu and Solomon Patton are going to probably leap over the rookie wide out from Wyoming.

Regardless of if the O line gives time to throw, and if there is anyone qualified to catch the ball, the Bucs will have real problems should something happen to Josh McCown and Mike Glennon. Mike Kafka is not an NFL ready  QB, not that many teams have a viable option at the 3rd spot. Washington did though, claiming Colt McCoy is exactly the kind of guy you’d expect to be the distant option designed to run the scout team during the year’s practices.

I was amazed at the caution expressed by Bucs media during the game when talking about Linebacker Danny Lansanah. Comments like “I wouldn’t be surprised if Lansanah makes this team” just seemed completely out of touch. If you listen to Lovie Smith, you hear how high the Bucs are on him. After his performance as a starter against the Bills, I was happy that only Justin Pawlowski tweeted out Lansanah should start this season!

Seems like Bucs fans are  picking apart Logan Mankins interview at One Bucs yesterday for his body language. Think about this…How would you feel if you went to work and   were told you’ve been transferred to Framington, Mass. You have to take your kids out of school, leave behind ten years of friendships…its a shock. He never had a chance to say goodbye in an exit interview like this, some of the tone was goodbye. We all know someone who migrated down here from up North. It takes a bit of time to adjust to the idea of living here. When they finally do, they realize they’ve moved to a paradise (for the most part 🙂

Solomon Patton and Jeff Demps had interesting nights, both seems at one point to show they don’t belong just yet. By the end of the game, you realize Patton made a few mistakes, but for the most part other than  returning some kickoffs he hopefully won’t starting next week, showed a knack for punt returns. He has good hands, and that is very important, not to turn the ball over.

In the second half Demps had a few holes to run to, and showed his speed, as well as showing how fast he is on kickoffs. Like Patton, he needs to know the difference between whats returnable and whats not, but when he does bring it out his speed makes each return a possible deep one.

It will be interesting to see the report on who gets cut today.
