Should The Cardinals Re-Sign David Freese?

We’re a little over a week from having pitchers and catchers report to Jupiter, FL and open Spring Training for the Cardinals.

That’s cool.

I took some time away this past week figuring that not much would happen. And judging by the Google News feed for the Cards,’nothing’ might be an overstatement. In fact the only thing of note was an commentary posted to VEB asking if the Cardinals should consider signing current free-agent third baseman David Freese.

Yes, that David Freese.

The longer his free agency, which has largely been stagnant, continues, the less likely it is that David Freese will find an opportunity to step in and immediately become a starter. While at 32, without a track record of being better than a pretty good MLB player, Freese is unlikely to garner a long-term deal, he conceivably has some window to receive a two or three year deal. He may have to wait a year, but he isn’t going to get that by sitting out.

The author (John Fleming) makes some very sane, rational points. And – if we’re being honest here – he turned what I thought was a ‘stir the pot’ off-season article into actual consideration. At least for me.

Only problem? Cardinals fans aren’t rational.

2011 wasn’t super long ago, but long enough for us to forget anything bad about David Freese’s play and consequently reduce his essence to a single game. You know what game.

Any time ANY player hit even a mild cold streak, the ‘play Freeeeeeeese’ faction would be out in full force. He can play center right? I’ve seen him throw across the diamond… he could totally strike out this lefty! Why do we even need Matheny???

I think it’s better off for everyone involved if we left the past in the past. Chances are Mo agrees.

+++++

Other than that?

I guess we’re in full-on countdown mode. Waiting for this last week to just hurry up and get done so we can start talking about something more tangible.

We’re close, friends. We’re close.
