What’s going on with the Titans at safety?

The Titans have been trying to upgrade the safety position since the draft, when they signed undrafted rookie free agent Tony Joiner.
Last week they had four safeties visit, veterans Adam Archuleta and Deke Cooper and undrafted rookie free agents D.J. Wolfe and Rocky Schwartz. Now they’ve signed Schwartz, giving them seven safeties on the roster.
I don’t know what this means about Chris Hope’s neck injury but it definitely means they want to have some insurance. Perhaps this is also an attempt to upgrade the depth and create some competition at the position.
There are several things we can read into this. It doesn’t appear the Titans are entirely satisfied with Calvin Lowry and may not have a lot of confidence in him, though he played better at the end of last year than he did in the first part of the season.
It also doesn’t bode well for Donnie Nickey, who has only managed to hang on to a roster spot for the last several years through his special teams play.
This will be another interesting position to keep an eye on in training camp.
On a related note, I came across a good read recently. It describes how Titans chief scout C.O. Brocato attempted to sign several undrafted rookie free agents, including Schwartz, after the draft. Enjoy.
