Happy Monday Cougs. Here’s hoping you enjoyed one of the last of the summer weekends of 2012, as Labor Day looms and after that, well, we steamroll right in to fall. Yours truly took the family and hit the lake with the RV this weekend and we enjoyed the heck out of it, but you can definitely tell in the evenings that fall is on the way.
But hey, FOOTBALL and FALL are a perfect marriage, and so it’s not that bad. And the fall around the NW is usually quite pleasant, so there’s that. But yeah, FOOTBALL is back this week! Hooray FOOTBALL.
Speaking of football, we did another podcast last night. Now up to episode 5 if you can believe it, season 1 of course (so it’s “S1E5” for the geeks). In this week’s podcast, we talk (surprise!) Cougs, and of course the big game on Thursday night. Initially our goal was to talk about the Cougs, and then touch on a game or two within the conference this week as to what’s interesting, etc. But we filled up about 28 minutes talking WSU-BYU, and a little bit about Oregon State for some reason, but that’s pretty much it. But hey, a lot of people will tell you that this week’s WSU-BYU clash is the best of the week anyway on the Pac-12 slate, so there you go.
Here’s the podcast embedded in this here post:

But if for some reason you can’t get it to play on your device, you can get it here as well.
Moving on to what’s worth reading out there on a Monday…..
A good look at the projected depth chart for Thursday’s opener, courtesy of Christian Caple. A good run down of each position, and it seems like he nails it from every angle. While the receivers look about as deep as we’ve seen in Pullman in some time, still, a bit disturbing is the projected D-line. Very little starting experience from the entire set of two-deeps up front when you break it down from end to end. I mean we all knew coming in how unproven things look up front, but when you subtract Anthony Laurenzi, who wasn’t a superstar but was an experienced type who could plug some holes here and there, you start to see why people are a little uneasy about the D-line.
Also a little surprised about Tyree Toomer (but if you have paid attention this fall, maybe not so much). I don’t know what happened to Toomer, but he was an honorable mention pick two seasons ago as a sophomore, but he just hasn’t been able to get back to that level ever since. Caple mentions that Toomer should still see plenty of playing time, and who knows how things go once the season gets off the ground. But I would sure love to see him finish his senior season on a high note, as he’s been a regular face on D the last several years and was there through some awfully lean times in Pullman.
Gabe Marks looks like a starter as well, and for good reason. And speaking of Marks, SI’s Stewart Mandel tabbed the young wideout as the top incoming Impact Frosh for 2012. Not just for WSU, but for the Pac-12 in general. It’s a good look at the conference from top to bottom, and definitely worth reading!
Cougfan’s Joe Doyle has a report from practice yesterday. While it’s a premium story, Doyle touches on the physical tone of practice on Sunday and touches on how far the team has come just since the start of camp.
Howie Stalwick has a look at all the possible records that COULD fall in 2012 under Mike Leach. Among the easily attainable should be Marquess Wilson and the career receiving record – per Stalwick, just 336 yards away, and he could have that by the UNLV game – as well as the career catches mark, where Wilson is 59 receptions away from Michael Bumpus.
All I know? I’m going to enjoy watching Wilson function in this offense. If this is the last season for him in Pullman (and if you follow the NFL mocks-n-such, there is excellent buzz about his abilities at the next level), then I hope he crushes every record possible on that list!
That’s about it for now. Enjoy your Monday, and as always, GO COUGS!
