When Dick Jauron thinks you're toast, you know it's over

Look, we all knew Trent Edwards was as good as gone for the 2010 season, but it was an eye opening experience to see Dick Jauron bench the Bills 10th version of the franchise quarterback. I mean this is Dick Jauron, the Barney the Dinosaur of coaching. You know, I love you, you love me, whatever the rest of the song goes. If Jauron was coaching pee wee football, he’d be the coach that takes all the players for ice cream after losing by 70 points.

But to bench Edwards? You know Jauron is pissed off! When the benching took place, I thought it was one of those bench the quarterback because the game was out of hand moments. But I was wrong. Asked to assess Edwards’ play, Jauron said:

“There was some good, obviously, but some things we missed. That’s why in the last series or the last few minutes we decided to get Ryan out there.”

Jauron was mum about Edwards starting status for next week, but the message was sent. Shape up or you will lose your only supporter (Jauron) in all of Buffalo.

What a difference a year makes, Edwards has become a complete mess. We have seen a ton of Bills quarterbacks who have withered in the spot light over the years, but I can’t think of one that has gone from looking as good as Edwards was the first half of last year, to not being able to pass for 200 yards. Hell, even Rob Johnson and Drew Bledsoe had some moments in their dying days in a Bills uniform.

If there is one thing you want your QB to be able to do, it’s play well in the 4th quarter. On Edwards last four drives, the Bills gained a total of 9 yards. His last three throws of the day were Buff state quality. The Bills still haven’t had a 200 yard passer since week 2 and haven’t passed for 300 yards since 2006. Like I’ve said since week 4 of the season, the Bills quarterback of the future isn’t on this team. Maybe, Jauron finally gets that.
