So Dan has finally made his announcement that he’s leaving ESPN as of August 17. In the 2 p.m. hour today, Dan hinted that he’d like to remain on radio, but doesn’t know if he’ll be back on TV.
Has CBS Radio contacted Dan’s people to be a possible replacement for Don Imus on WFAN? Is Dan going to the Premiere Radio Networks to be a syndicated host like Jim Rome?
According to Dan, ESPN appealed to him to stay on. He’s still under contract to the Alleged Worldwide Leader for another year. I would think that if CBS Radio asks him to fill Imus’ spot, it would have to pay ESPN or at least Dan would have to make a payment.
It’s not as if this is a move to plug something, Dan Patrick has been one of the better hosts on ESPN Radio and has made a name for himself on SportsCenter. Could we see him move to NBC as the Sports Media Watch blog has suggested?
To me, I can see Patrick wanting to branch out from sports and deciding to talk other things. His friend, Keith Olbermann has branched out successfully after leaving ESPN to become a news anchor on MSNBC. Could we see Dan partnering with Keith on Countdown? And with Patrick going to MSNBC, it would leave him open to doing sports work as Olbermann is doing this fall on Football Night in America.
The possibilities are endless for Patrick who was also a candidate to be a host on Good Morning America. The fact that he’s leaving ESPN without any rancor (unlike Olbermann) also leaves the door open for him to return in the future. But, the speculation on what’s next for Dan begins right now.
