February 3 should be an official holiday for college sports fanatics. What’s so special about this date though? It is simple: It’s National Signing Day. It is when fans find out who are the latest high school players to join their beloved college; when they start to speculate you will become the next great star for their favorite team.
Today I am here to present you three incoming freshmen that could make an impact for the Connecticut Huskies’ 2016 football season. But first let’s take a quick look at their current class.
UConn’s 2016 class features 16 players. Ten of them in which are three-star athletes, according to 247sports, and the rest are two-stars. With that being said, it gives the Huskies and third-year head coach Bob Diaco the No. 93 class in the nation and No. 11 class in the American Athletic Conference.
So out of those 16 players, which three can make a major impact right away?
Quayvon Skanes, WR
Typically the position that makes an impact during freshman year is usually wide receiver, which is exactly what Skanes plays.
The 5-foot-10 receiver out of Chicago committed to the Huskies back on June 25, 2015. He is a three-star recruit who also received offers from Big Ten schools, Illinois and Northwestern.
Reason for Skanes being one of the three freshmen who could make an impact in his debut year at UConn is because of the depth of position currently on the roster.
The projected starting receivers for the Huskies in 2016 are Noel Thomas and Tyraiq Beals. Thomas led the team with 719 receiving yards last season while Beals recorded 275 yards. With that being said, Skanes should have a good chance of seeing time this year either at the slot receiver position or maybe even supplant Beals as the in this upcoming season.
Noel Brouse, DE
The next possible impact freshman for the Huskies is a 6-foot-6 defensive lineman out of Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Before committing to UConn, Brouse was originally committed to the Villanova Wildcats and the Syracuse Orange.
Brouse received a lot of attention from FCS schools during his recruitment. However with his size and the way Diaco runs his defense, don’t be surprised if Brouse cracks the defensive line rotation as a freshman.
If he doesn’t play defensive line, Brouse could also play offensive line as that what he was recruited as for Villanova.
Tahj Herring, DB
The last potential impact freshman for UConn is the highest rated defensive prospect in its recruiting class.
Herring is a lengthy defensive back out of Suffield Academy located in Connecticut. He stands at 6-foot-1, weighs around 190 pounds and runs a 4.6 40-time.
In 2014, Herring recorded 28 tackles, four interceptions and one interception returned for a touchdown.
Not only did he receive an offer to UConn, but Herring also received offers from Temple, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
Looking at UConn’s class, it seems highly unlikely that some of these freshmen will see playing time in 2016. However these are the three most likely 2016 recruits you may see early playing time while in Storrs.
